What is 2D Design

Elements of Art

These are the building blocks used by artists to create works of art.  (If you don't understand any of these terms - look them up now)

  • Line
  • Shape
  • Value
  • Texture
  • Space
  • Shape
  • Colour
Principles of Art

The principles of art describe the ways artists use the elements of art in their works of art.  Often they are used to help create a better composition. (We will be learning more about the principles of design as we work through this class)

  • Balance
  • Contrast
  • Emphasis
  • Movement
  • Unity
  • Rhythm/Repetition
  • Variety

2D Design in AP is works of art that fall under the following descriptions

  • work that employs line, shape or colour to create unity or variety in a composition
  • work that demonstrates symmetry/asymmetry; balance or anomaly
  • work that explores figure/ground relationships and occupied and unoccupied spaces
  • development of a modular or repeat pattern to create rhythm
  • colour organization using primary, secondary, tertiary, analogous or other colour relationships for emphasis or contrast in a composition
  • work that investigates or exaggerates proportions or scale
